Wing Pang

This comic is a personal response to Uncle Greg Simms’ story “Sharing Stories”. He is an elder of the Gadigal, Darug, Gundungurra and Yuin people. I sincerely show my gratitude and respect to the traditional custodians of this land for entrusting us with these stories and knowledge. The idea of sharing food and sharing stories reminded me of my homestay experience in China. I have directly quoted phrases from Uncle Greg’s story throughout. Proudly produced on Darug land.

“Sunflower Seeds” draw from the idea of communal food sharing and how stories were often told at mealtimes between people who might not have blood relations to each other. It is a retelling of my experience as a homestay student in the small town of Changxing, where I was welcomed as part of the family during the festive season.
